WHERE DOES THE TRIP START & END?
Our 9-Day San Blas Sea Kayaking Trip starts & ends at the Tocumen International Airport (PTY) with a transfer-in
to our hotel on the Panama Canal on Trip Day 1, and a transfer-out back to the airport on Trip Day 9.
In case you find yourself in Panama City already prior to trip start, you can start your TSK trip by checking into the hotel on Trip Day 1 (thus skipping the airport transfer-in). Similarly, if you don’t need the transfer-out to the airport on Trip Day 9, your TSK trip will conclude on hotel check-out.
WHEN DOES THE TRIP START & END?
By default, our 9-Day San Blas Sea Kayaking Trip starts on a Saturday, ending the following Sunday. However, at the moment we don’t work with a fixed trip calendar. Simply contact & inquire about our trip, and let us know your preferred travel dates, or time frame, whereafter we’ll look into available options.
After hotel check in on Trip Day 1, you will meet your trip leader that late afternoon for dinner & trip briefing. The following morning we will travel to the San Blas Archipelago. On Trip Day 8 we will travel back to Panama City to check into the same hotel for your last night of the trip. The following day we will arrange your transfer out to the Tocumen International Airport in time to catch your flight out.
For large group bookings (6+ people), we can have this trip start on any day of the week (subject to availability). Please contact us to discuss options.
TRAVELING TO PANAMA, WHAT AIRPORT SHOULD I FLY TO?
Tocumen International Airport (PTY), for both arrival & departure.
DO I NEED ANY PADDLING EXPERIENCE FOR THIS TRIP?
Our San Blas trip is not for novice or beginner paddlers. Due to (mild) currents, and swells in some open channels we will be crossing, this trip is rated for intermediate level paddlers. You should be in relatively good shape, and able to swim.
IS WATER SAFE TO DRINK?
On this trip we will take all the drinking water with us, in holding tanks that we fill in the community island on Trip Day 2. This water will be transported by our support boat, and filtered by a carbon filter before drinking. Throughout the trip you will be able to constantly fill your water bottles.
ANY DANGERS DURING THE TRIP?
No direct dangers, other than the risk of sunburn, and dehydration. For this we highly recommend drinking plenty of water, and using sun protective gear such as a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, UV protective clothing, sunscreen, and (bicycle) gloves when paddling.
Basically the only threat while staying on the islands are falling coconuts. Make sure not to sit, stand or sleep under palm trees with coconuts.
Although we rarely encounter the Portuguese man o’ war (bluebottle), we should be aware of their presence in the waters we paddle and swim. On average we spot one on every five trips, and mostly while paddling. We have never had any TSK guest get stung, and we like to keep it this way.
During snorkeling we occassionally encounter Lionfish, which are highly venomous. The good thing is they are not agressive and will not attack or harm you unless touched. They sit still, usually hiding in the coral reef, away from the water surface. They are beautiful to look at, and a bonus when we spot them. For we look at them from a distance, and leaving them alone, we have never had any of our guests get stung.
Apart from that, we are away from other humans (other than the very respectable Kuna people), so basically it’s the safest environment imaginable.
WILL I BE SPENDING ANY MONEY DURING THE TRIP?
Our kayaking trips include all meals, gear, lodging, and drinks (water/juices/tea/coffee), therefore no additional expenses are required. If you do however like to buy souvenirs, or other (alcoholic) drinks to be purchased in Panama City, we suggest taking some cash with you.
The Mola in art form (multi-layered textiles made by Kuna women) is considered a highly popular souvenir. Many San Blas visitors including TSK guests are happily bringing back home multiple Molas, which go for an average of $25 per piece.
Although ‘Balboa’ is the official currency, the main effective currency used in Panama is the US Dollar.
HOW DO WE TRANSPORT OUR LUGGAGE & BAGS?
First of all, On Trip Day 1 we will hand you 2 dry bags each for you to pack for the San Blas paddling trip, or alternatively you can bring your own drybags. The excess luggage you will not need on the islands can be safely stored at the hotel to be retrieved on Trip Day 8, after coming back from the islands.
When in San Blas, traveling from island to island we will be carrying all our gear including your dry bags in our support boat. There’s no need to be carrying any dunnage in your kayak, other than your day bag with preferred items easily accessible (water bottle, sunscreen, camera, etc).
CAN I BRING OR BUY ALCOHOL FOR/DURING THE TRIP?
It’s totally fine bringing your own alcoholic beverages into San Blas. Since there’s limited options to buy alcohol while in San Blas, we do suggest bringing your favorite drinks from Panama City. You can purchase them, or any other readily available item prior to the trip, with the last possibility being on Trip Day 2, when we’re leaving the city by car on the way to San Blas. Make sure to ask your guide/driver about this.
IS IT A GOOD TRIP FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN?
We welcome families with children over 8 years of age to join this trip, as long as they have sea kayaking experience, and are used to outdoor activities, and camping. Our tandem kayaks are perfect to double up with a child, as an adult (parent, friend, guide, etc) will be in full control of the kayak while watching over the child sitting in front.
If you’re not sure, you can always contact us to discuss.
MOTHER-IN-LAW WANTS TO JOIN BUT NOT PADDLE?
Obviously not everyone is keen on paddling a sea kayak. Our trips are wonderful for everyone, which is why we offer the possibility for non-paddlers to join our adventures, too! Our Kuna crew will be happy to create space in the support boat for people to ride the boat instead of paddling.
San Blas is not only for paddlers! In case your entire party wants to experience one of our trips without paddling, we will be happy to offer this possibility, too! Simply contact us for more information.
PRIOR TO TRIP

On booking we require a down payment of $500 per person, and the balance 60 days prior to trip start, unless agreed otherwise. WHAT IF WE NEED TO CANCEL OUR TRIP AFTER BOOKING?
If you do have to cancel a trip, please confirm by e-mail a.s.a.p. We charge a cancellation fee depending on the number of days prior to your trip that we receive your cancellation notice. For more information on our cancellation and refund policy, we like to refer to our Cancellation & Refunds section mentioned in our general terms & conditions.
DO I NEED TRIP INSURANCE FOR THIS TRIP?
We highly recommend you purchase emergency medical evacuation insurance when participating in this expedition. Evacuations can be prolonged, difficult, and expensive. In additional, we suggest protecting yourself, your belongings, and your vacation through the purchase of a travel insurance plan. A travel insurance plan covers your non-refundable payments in most cases, should you have to cancel your trip due to illness or injury—yours or that of an extended family member—even at the last minute. Personal belongings and cameras are carried entirely at the owner’s risk, and T.S.K. accepts no responsibility for lost, damaged, delayed or stolen property.
WHAT TIME OF YEAR DO YOU RUN THIS TRIP?
We offer this trip in high season (dry season) which runs from December until mid May.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN TAVELING TO PANAMA?
Panama is becoming a very popular tourism destination, and for good reason! Panama City is called the Miami of Central America for its similar looking skyline. The old colonial town of Casco Viejo, the Panama Canal, and the fish market are among many of the highlights to visit when in the city. Obviously the country of Panama has many hot spots, but our favorite is obviously San Blas.
It’s relatively cheap, and easy travel in Panama. Naturally, lots of things are different here than where you’re from (unless you’re actually from Panama), but there are also many similarities. To know exactly what to expect, we will provide an extensive document on booking, covering all you need to know for a well prepared & planned journey to Panama (City), with the focus on San Blas.
WHAT KAYAKS DO YOU HAVE?
We use a variety of kayak types, and brands, the majority being Storms and Squalls by Current Designs. They are sturdy, sit-insides, all with rudder system. The single kayaks are 15-16 feet, and the doubles 20 feet.
WHAT’S THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE ON THIS TRIP?
The first and last night of this trip will be hotel based in Panama City. The remaining 6 nights will be spend tent camping on 5 different islands. Tents, and air mattrasses will be provided. We ask you to bring your own bed linen, and towel (this will also be mentioned in our suggested packing list that we will send you after booking).
Our campsite will also include a sitting area with tables and chairs, and hammocks for you to relax (some even like to spend the night in a hammock).
DO YOU OFFER GROUP DISCOUNTS?
We offer discounts for parties of 6 people or more (applied per booking). Please see the trip rates for more information.
ARE MEALS INCLUDED?
Our 9-day San Blas sea kayaking trip includes 3 nutricious meals per day (starting with dinner on Trip Day 1, ending with breakfast on Trip Day 9, with the exception of Dinner on Day 8). When at the islands, our Kuna chef will prepare the meals on site, using most of the food brought from the city. We try to use fresh ingredients like fruit, vegetables, bread, eggs, cold cuts, as much as possible. When available we will always try to add freshly caught fish to the menu (including Lobster when in season).
For drinks we have coffee, tea, and fruit flavored drink mix. Drinking water is always readily available, and we stimulate you drink plenty of it.
DO YOU OFFER PRIVATE (CUSTOMIZED) TRIPS?
We offer private trips for single bookings of 6+ people, if requested prior to booking. For private trips for less than 5 people, an additional fee is charged based on the amount of people.
We can only customize private trips (e.g. more or less paddling, food, drinks, guides, additional days and activities, more destinations, etc).
Please contact us to discuss the options of booking your private/customized trip.
